12V or 24V

Should You Choose a 12V or 24V DC Hydraulic Power Unit?

You’re replacing a hydraulic power unit on a dump trailer, service truck, or snowplow, and one of the first questions that comes up is whether you need a 12-volt or a 24-volt system. Choosing the wrong voltage can create installation problems, damage electrical components, or prevent the unit from operating altogether. If you’re trying to decide between a 12V and 24V DC hydraulic power unit, here’s what you should know before ordering a replacement or specifying one for a new application.

What’s the Difference Between a 12V and 24V DC Hydraulic Power Unit?

Both systems perform the same basic job. They use a DC electric motor to drive a hydraulic pump that supplies pressurized fluid to cylinders or other hydraulic components. The primary difference is the voltage required to operate the motor. A 12V unit is designed for equipment with a 12-volt electrical system, while a 24V unit is built for equipment using a 24-volt electrical system. The hydraulic side of the system may look very similar. It’s the electrical requirements that determine which one is appropriate.

When Should You Choose a 12V Power Unit?

Twelve-volt power units are the most common choice for light and medium-duty mobile equipment because many vehicles and trailers already operate on 12-volt electrical systems.

Common applications include dump and utility trailers, pickup truck accessories, and RV hydraulic systems. If the equipment already has a 12-volt battery system, staying with a 12V hydraulic power unit is usually the simplest and most practical solution.

When Is a 24V Power Unit the Better Choice?

Twenty-four-volt systems are commonly found on larger commercial vehicles and equipment where the electrical system is already designed around higher voltage. You’ll often find 24V power units on:

  • Heavy-duty trucks
  • Commercial equipment
  • Larger service vehicles
  • Some municipal equipment
  • Certain construction and industrial machines

These systems can be a good fit for demanding applications where the equipment manufacturer has standardized on a 24-volt electrical system.

Is One More Powerful Than the Other?

This is one of the most common questions we hear. The short answer is no. A 24V power unit is not automatically more powerful than a 12V model. Hydraulic performance depends on factors such as pump displacement, operating pressure, and flow requirements.

Voltage simply describes the electrical supply needed to operate the motor. A properly designed 12V system can perform exceptionally well when it’s matched to the application.

Can You Replace a 12V Unit With a 24V Unit?

Unless you’re also converting the entire electrical system, replacing a 12V unit with a 24V model isn’t recommended. Likewise, installing a 12V unit on equipment designed for 24 volts can create electrical and performance problems. Before ordering a replacement, verify the system’s voltage, battery configuration, and manufacturer recommendations. Matching the original voltage is almost always the safest approach.

What Else Should You Consider?

Voltage is only one part of selecting the right hydraulic power unit. You’ll also want to consider:

  • Required operating pressure
  • Flow rate
  • Reservoir capacity
  • Duty cycle
  • Available installation space
  • Control valve configuration
  • Mounting requirements

Taking all of these factors into account helps ensure the replacement performs as expected once it’s installed.

What If You’re Replacing an Older or Obsolete Unit?

Many mobile hydraulic systems remain in service for years, even after the original power unit has been discontinued. If the identification tag is missing or replacement parts are no longer available, don’t assume the entire system has to be redesigned.

A supplier experienced with mobile hydraulics can often identify the original specifications, recommend a comparable replacement, or help configure a custom power unit that fits your application. Having photos of the existing unit, measurements, or part numbers can make the process much easier.
